This intellectually stimulating, exclusive one day tour focuses on the profound historical and mythological layers beneath the Western Province. The journey takes you from the modern gateway of the airport to two dramatically different yet equally vital sites: the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya, steeped in Buddhist mythology (The Ramayana Trail and the Buddha’s visit), and the Belilena Cave in Kitulgala, home to the 12,000 year old remains of the Balangoda Man (Homo sapiens balangodensis).1 This efficiently paced itinerary blends deep spirituality with pre historic archaeology, providing a unique cultural experience before the return transfer

Day 01: Arrival, Ancient Echoes & Departure

The tour begins with an early morning pickup from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB). The morning's focus is on the sacred and mythological, visiting the Kelaniya Temple, known for its intricate frescoes and its association with a visit by Lord Buddha.

• Early Morning Transfer (05:00 AM): Pickup from CMB and a short, direct transfer to the sacred city of Kelaniya.

• Morning Spiritual Visit (06:00 AM - 08:00 AM):

  • Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya: Explore this ancient temple, revered as a site visited by the Buddha.3 Study the magnificent frescoes and learn about its crucial connection to the Ramayana epic.

Following the mythological exploration, the journey continues inland toward Kitulgala, transitioning from sacred history to ancient human history. A comfortable transfer is followed by a short, invigorating trek to the prehistoric cave site of Belilena, home to the oldest evidence of modern man in South Asia.

• Transfer & Trek (08:00 AM - 12:30 PM):

  • Scenic Drive: Comfortable transfer inland towards Kitulgala (Approx. 2.5 hours drive).

  • Belilena Cave Trek: Engage in a gentle, guided trek through the rainforest trails to reach the entrance of the Belilena Prehistoric Cave.4

• Prehistoric Exploration (12:30 PM - 01:30 PM):
